Trans Fats: Engaging Stakeholders in the Policy Development Process

Client: Health Canada
Solution: Stakeholder Engagement and Public Consultation

The need for engagement: Growing awareness, mounting pressure
Faced with calls to eliminate trans fats from the Canadian diet, the Trans Fat Task Force needed to develop actionable recommendations for the Minister of Health.

Shaping the solution: Reaching out effectively
Intersol helped design a series of Trans Fat Task Force meetings and two public consultations. We advised the Task Force on how to solicit public input and carry out successful consultations, and facilitated and reported on the sessions that were held.

Assessing the outcomes: Getting the full perspective
The consultation process provided a broad range of stakeholder opinions: Task Force meetings were attended by upwards of 30 Task Force members while the public consultations each attracted between 50 and 100 participants. The Task Force reached consensus on a set of recommendations that were presented to the Minister of Health and have been implemented. Voluntary measures to significantly reduce trans fats in the Canadian diet are being implemented by Industry and Health Canada is monitoring progress to ensure that the desired results are achieved.
